Premium shoe fit FAQs
What is a Premium Running Shoe Fit assessment?
A Premium Running Shoe Fit is an in-depth assessment designed to help you find running shoes that suit your individual foot mechanics, running style and goals.
At Fitstuff Clinic in Guildford, we use advanced Footscan pressure analysis to understand how your feet move and distribute pressure when walking, identifying characteristics that may influence your choice of running shoes.
We combine this information with expert footwear advice and treadmill testing to recommend trainers with the features and technologies best suited to you.
It’s a much more personalised approach than simply choosing between neutral and stability running shoes.
How is a Premium Shoe Fit different from standard running shop gait analysis?
Traditional running shop gait analysis often focuses on how much your feet pronate, typically categorising runners as needing either neutral or stability shoes.
Our Premium Shoe Fit goes considerably further. Using Footscan technology, we assess how pressure moves through your feet, identify potential areas of instability and explore how different shoe characteristics may influence your running.
We look beyond broad footwear categories to consider specific features such as cushioning, support, shoe geometry and stability technologies.
This allows us to make more individualised recommendations based on how your feet function, rather than relying on a simple footwear classification.
How does Footscan technology help identify the best running shoes for me?
Our Footscan pressure plate measures how pressure is distributed across your feet as you walk, providing detailed information about your foot mechanics.
It allows us to assess how your weight transfers through each foot and identify movement characteristics or potential areas of instability that may be relevant when choosing running shoes.
We then use these findings to help select footwear with appropriate support, cushioning and other design features.
You’ll also test different trainers while running on our treadmill, allowing us to observe how you move in each shoe and consider your comfort before making a final recommendation.
Can wearing the wrong running shoes cause running injuries?
Running shoes can influence how your feet and lower limbs move, and unsuitable footwear may contribute to discomfort or aggravate certain running-related problems.
If you’re experiencing recurring niggles, such as foot pain, Achilles discomfort, shin pain or knee symptoms, it may be worth reviewing whether your current trainers are appropriate for you.
Our Premium Shoe Fit examines your foot mechanics and how you respond to different running shoes, helping identify footwear characteristics that may be more suitable.
However, running injuries are often multifactorial, so footwear is only one part of the picture. Where necessary, we may recommend a more detailed clinical assessment.
How do I know whether I need neutral or stability running shoes?
Choosing between neutral and stability running shoes isn’t always as straightforward as it sounds.
Although these categories can be useful, running shoes vary considerably in their design, and two shoes labelled as ‘stability’ may provide support in very different ways.
At Fitstuff Clinic, we use Footscan pressure analysis to assess your individual foot mechanics before exploring which footwear characteristics may suit you best.
We consider factors such as pressure distribution, stability, cushioning and shoe geometry, rather than simply prescribing a shoe based on how much your foot pronates.
The aim is to find trainers that feel comfortable and work well with your individual running style.
What happens during a Premium Running Shoe Fit appointment?
Your 45-minute Premium Shoe Fit at Fitstuff Clinic in Guildford begins with a discussion about your running experience, current footwear, any recurring niggles and what you’d like from your new trainers.
You’ll then walk across our Footscan pressure plate, allowing us to assess how pressure moves through your feet and identify relevant characteristics of your foot mechanics.
Using these results, we’ll select approximately two or three suitable running shoes for you to try.
You’ll have the opportunity to run in each pair on our treadmill while we observe your running movement and discuss how each shoe feels.
We’ll then help you identify the footwear features and models that best suit your individual needs.
Is a Premium Shoe Fit suitable for beginner and experienced runners?
Absolutely! Our Premium Running Shoe Fit is suitable for runners of all abilities, whether you’re buying your first proper pair of running shoes or have been running for years.
For beginners, it can take the guesswork out of choosing trainers and help you understand what features to look for.
Experienced runners may benefit from exploring different shoe technologies, particularly if their training, running goals or footwear preferences have changed.
It’s also a useful assessment for runners experiencing recurring discomfort who suspect their footwear may be contributing.
Every appointment is tailored to your individual needs, with the aim of finding shoes that feel comfortable and suit the way you run.
